Blue Catfish

While Horntown, Oklahoma, may not be the first place that comes to mind for blue catfish, the surrounding waterways offer some under-the-radar opportunities. The Little River and nearby smaller lakes can hold surprising numbers of blue cats, though you'll need to put in some effort to find them. Look for deep holes, channel bends, and areas with current, especially below dams or spillways if accessible. These fish are often found relating to structure, so target submerged timber, rock piles, and ledges. The best time to target blue catfish is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, although they can be caught year-round. Cut bait is the most effective method, with shad, skipjack herring, or even commercially prepared catfish bait being good choices. A local tip: use a strong rod and reel, as blue catfish can grow to impressive sizes. Access can be tricky, so research public access points and boat ramps beforehand. Be prepared for varying water conditions, as rainfall can significantly impact water levels and clarity.
