Blue Catfish

While not as abundant as their channel cat cousins, blue catfish can be found in some of the larger stock tanks and ponds near Penelope, Texas. These larger catfish prefer deeper water and tend to be more predatory than channel cats. Targeting them specifically requires a bit more planning and heavier tackle. Late fall and early spring, when water temperatures are cooler, can be excellent times to target blues. Use larger cut bait, such as shad or carp, fished on a Carolina rig or a three-way swivel. Because blue catfish can grow to impressive sizes, be prepared with a heavy-duty rod and reel, and at least 20-pound test line. Gaining access to private ponds is paramount for success, so networking with local landowners is essential. Look for deeper holes and channels within the ponds, as these are prime holding areas for larger blue cats. Remember to handle these fish with care, as they are a valuable part of the local ecosystem.
