Blue Rockfish

Homer, Alaska offers a unique opportunity to target Blue Rockfish in some truly stunning scenery. Unlike their cousins further south, these rockfish are accessible from shore and nearshore waters here. Focus your efforts around rocky points and kelp forests along the shores of Kachemak Bay and out towards the entrance. Summer is prime time, particularly from June through August, when the weather is relatively mild and the rockfish are actively feeding. Look for areas with strong tidal currents, as these tend to concentrate baitfish and, consequently, rockfish. A simple setup of a jig head with a curly tail grub or a small shrimp imitation works wonders. A local tip: many anglers have success fishing off the Homer Spit, but be mindful of the strong tides and boat traffic. Another option is to explore the smaller bays west of Homer by boat for more secluded fishing. The Blue Rockfish here average a respectable size, and offer a delicious meal.
