These voracious predators follow schools of menhaden, mackerel, and herring, making inshore waters and the mouths of rivers like the Kennebunk River prime locations. Peak season is typically late summer into early fall, when blues are fattening up before their migration. For best results, match your lure to the prevalent baitfish. Surface poppers and fast-retrieving spoons can trigger explosive strikes. Remember, bluefish have sharp teeth, so use wire leaders. A local tip: try fishing around the jetties at the mouth of the river during an incoming tide. Blues often congregate there, ambushing baitfish swept in by the current.
