Bluegill

Looking for some reliable bluegill action in Nebraska? Cozad is a good starting point. The numerous small ponds, lakes, and backwaters associated with the Platte River offer excellent bluegill habitat. Spring and summer are prime times, especially during the spawning season when the fish congregate in shallow water. A simple bobber and worm rig is deadly, but small jigs and poppers can also be effective. Local tip: Focus on areas with submerged vegetation or near docks and piers. These provide cover and attract the insects that bluegill feed on. The bluegill in this region are generally good-sized, providing plenty of fun for anglers of all ages. Many of the smaller ponds are on private land, so be sure to obtain permission before fishing. The Platte River State Recreation Area nearby provides public access to some bluegill-holding waters.
