For some fantastic bluegill action in the Clemson area, look no further than the smaller ponds and backwaters connected to Lake Hartwell and nearby smaller lakes. These sun-drenched, shallow areas teem with bluegill, particularly during the spawning season in late spring and early summer. Look for bedding areas in protected coves with sandy bottoms. A simple setup of a cane pole, light line, and a cricket or worm is all you need for some classic bluegill fishing. A local's secret: Check out the smaller ponds on Clemson University's property (with permission, of course). They are often lightly fished and hold some surprisingly large bluegill.
