If you're looking for some classic South Carolina bluegill action, Hampton County offers several promising freshwater spots. The Savannah River and its tributaries, along with smaller ponds and lakes dotted around the area, hold healthy populations. Spring and early summer are prime times, as the bluegill move into shallow water to spawn. Look for them around lily pads, submerged vegetation, and fallen timber. A simple bobber rig with crickets or worms is tough to beat, but small jigs and poppers can also be effective. For access, check out the public boat ramps and fishing piers along the Savannah River. Many smaller ponds are privately owned, so be sure to obtain permission before fishing. Local tip: the bluegill in this area tend to be a decent size, so don't be afraid to upsize your hook slightly to avoid the smaller ones.
