Bonnethead Shark

Hatteras, North Carolina, provides a unique opportunity to target Bonnethead Sharks, especially during the warmer months from late spring through early fall. These smaller members of the hammerhead family are common in the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, as well as nearshore waters. The relatively shallow, grassy flats are prime hunting grounds. Drifting with live or cut bait, such as shrimp or blue crabs, is a highly effective method. Focus your efforts around inlets and channels where tidal currents concentrate bait. A Carolina rig with a circle hook is a popular choice. Launching from Oregon Inlet Fishing Center provides quick access to productive fishing areas. Hatteras Bonnetheads are known for their relatively docile nature compared to larger shark species, making them a great target for light tackle enthusiasts. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain this healthy population. Be mindful of the strong currents and changing weather conditions that are typical of the Outer Banks.
