If you're looking for classic Montana brook trout action, Missoula is a great jumping-off point. The area boasts a variety of smaller streams and tributaries that hold surprisingly large brookies. While the Blackfoot River gets most of the attention, explore the smaller creeks feeding into it and the Clark Fork. Spring and early summer, before the runoff hits its peak, is prime time. As the water warms, focus on higher-elevation streams that stay cooler. A local trick is to hike a bit further than most anglers are willing to go; the rewards in solitude and larger fish are well worth the effort. Consider using smaller dry flies or nymphs in the clear, shallow water. Be mindful of private land access – always check regulations and obtain permission where necessary. Don't overlook the smaller beaver ponds either, they can hold some surprisingly large, aggressive brook trout.
