Brown Trout

Brown Trout fishing in Lake Isabella presents a unique challenge for anglers. These fish are less abundant than rainbows but can grow to impressive sizes. Focus your efforts in the cooler months, particularly late fall and early winter, when browns are spawning and more aggressive. Target rocky points and submerged timber with large swimbaits or crankbaits that mimic smaller trout. Night fishing can also be productive. A key to success is understanding the lake's structure. Use a fish finder to locate drop-offs and submerged channels. Also, be aware that Isabella's brown trout are notoriously wary, so use fluorocarbon leaders and make long casts to avoid spooking them. Access to prime brown trout habitat is best from the Auxiliary Dam access point on the south side of the lake.
