Brown Trout

Golden, Colorado, offers some fantastic Brown Trout fishing, primarily in Clear Creek as it flows through town and upstream into the mountains. This freestone stream provides diverse habitat, from riffles and runs to deeper pools, perfect for browns. Spring and fall are generally considered the best times to fish, with consistent flows and active trout. Early morning and late afternoon can be particularly productive. Nymphing is a popular and effective technique, especially using stonefly or mayfly patterns. Streamer fishing can also be productive, especially in the fall as browns become more aggressive. Access is relatively easy along the Clear Creek Trail, but be aware that some sections are heavily fished. A local tip is to focus on areas with overhanging vegetation or undercut banks, as these provide excellent cover for browns. The brown trout in Clear Creek are known for their vibrant colors and can be surprisingly wary, so stealth is key.
