Brown Trout

Similar to rainbow trout, brown trout fishing near Westmont, Illinois, is largely dependent on stocking programs. While not as common as rainbow trout stockings, the IDNR occasionally stocks brown trout in select locations, including some stretches of the DuPage River. As with rainbows, check the IDNR website for the most current stocking information. Spring and fall offer the best chances, coinciding with stocking schedules and cooler water temperatures. Brown trout are generally considered more challenging to catch than rainbows, often exhibiting more wary behavior. A local tip: If brown trout are stocked, try using smaller, more natural-looking presentations than you might for rainbows. Flies, small crankbaits that resemble minnows, and nightcrawlers can all be effective. Also, focus on areas with deeper water and more cover, as brown trout tend to prefer these habitats. Be prepared for a more technical and potentially more rewarding fishing experience.
