Northern Pike

While not known as a pike hotspot, Westmont, IL, and its surrounding areas offer limited but potentially rewarding northern pike fishing. The key is targeting the larger, connected waterways like the Des Plaines River and its associated canals and backwaters. These areas, though sometimes heavily pressured, hold pockets of pike. Spring, immediately after ice-out, is a prime time, as the pike are actively feeding after the winter months. Fall, as water temperatures cool, is another excellent opportunity. Consider targeting areas with submerged vegetation or structure, as pike are ambush predators. Local Tip: The Des Plaines River can be accessed from various points along the Illinois Prairie Path. Be prepared for some walking to reach the less-pressured areas. Pike in this region tend to be on the smaller side, but the thrill of the hunt in an unexpected location makes it worthwhile. Use wire leaders to prevent bite-offs, and be ready for a fight!
