Northern Pike

While Crossville, Illinois, isn't exactly known as a pike hotspot, determined anglers can find Northern Pike in the larger bodies of water connected to the Wabash River. Look to the sloughs and backwaters off the main channel, particularly during the cooler months. Spring (late March-May) as the water warms and fall (September-November) before the freeze are your best bets. Pike will move into these shallower areas to spawn or ambush prey. A local tip: focus on areas with submerged timber or weed beds, as these provide excellent cover for pike. Public access can be limited, so research boat ramps and access points along the Wabash River carefully before heading out. Pike in this area tend to be on the smaller side, but a patient angler can be rewarded with a respectable catch. Be prepared for stained water conditions, and use lures with good vibration or flash.
