Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near East Alton, Illinois, means exploring the backwaters and sloughs connected to the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. These weedy, shallow areas provide ideal ambush points for pike. Spring is an exceptional time to fish for pike as they move into these areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and jerkbaits are effective lures. Pike will often be found near submerged vegetation or fallen timber. Later in the fall, as water temperatures drop, pike become more active again, aggressively feeding before winter. Be mindful of the current in the main river channels and focus on areas with slower-moving water. Public boat ramps provide access, but a smaller boat or kayak is advantageous for navigating the shallower backwaters. Consider using a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth.
