Northern Pike

If you're chasing Northern Pike in Southern Illinois, the sloughs and backwaters off the Ohio River near Old Shawneetown can be surprisingly productive. While not a classic pike destination, these overlooked areas offer a unique opportunity. Spring is prime time, as the pike move into shallow, weedy areas to spawn. Look for them in the flooded timber and along the edges of vegetation. Fall can also be good as they fatten up before winter. Access is primarily by boat, with several public access ramps available along the Ohio. Be aware of fluctuating water levels on the river, which can significantly impact fish location and accessibility. Local tip: Try using large, flashy lures like spinnerbaits or spoons in the stained water, and don't be afraid to fish them aggressively. The pike here aren't as pressured as in more popular northern fisheries, so they can be quite willing to strike.
