Largemouth Bass

Old Shawneetown provides access to some overlooked Largemouth Bass fishing in the backwaters and sloughs of the Ohio River. The river's floodplain creates a complex network of waterways that hold good numbers of bass. Spring is fantastic as bass move shallow to spawn in the flooded vegetation. Target areas with lily pads, submerged timber, and creek mouths. Summer can be tough due to the heat, but early morning and late evening can be productive. Fall sees the bass feeding heavily before winter. A local tip: Pay attention to water clarity, as the Ohio River can be quite muddy. Use lures that create vibration and flash, like crankbaits and spinnerbaits, in stained water. Soft plastics in darker colors can also be effective. Boat access is readily available, but be aware of fluctuating water levels and current. The bass in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different presentations to find what they're hitting.
