Brown Trout

While not typically known for trout fishing, the small, spring-fed creeks that feed into the Ohio River near Old Shawneetown might hold a few Brown Trout. Stocking is infrequent, so any browns you find are likely holdovers or the result of natural reproduction in very limited numbers. The best time to try your luck is in the early spring or late fall when water temperatures are cooler. Focus on areas with deep pools, undercut banks, and plenty of cover. These creeks are small and can be easily fished with light tackle and small spinners or flies. Access can be challenging, often requiring some hiking and bushwhacking. Be mindful of private property and obtain permission where necessary. Consider this more of an exploratory fishing trip than a guaranteed trout haul, but the chance of finding a hidden gem makes it worthwhile.
