Brown Trout

While Brewster, Minnesota, isn't typically known as a trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find opportunities for Brown Trout in the area's smaller, lesser-known streams and tributaries that feed into the larger watersheds. These streams, often spring-fed, provide the cool, oxygenated waters that Browns prefer. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall are prime times. The Browns can be more active as water temperatures cool, and spawning urges kick in. Access can be challenging; many of these streams cross private land, so always obtain permission. Look for areas with undercut banks, fallen logs, and riffles, as these provide cover and feeding lanes for the fish. Given the typically smaller size of these waters, a light spinning rod or fly rod is ideal. A local tip: focus on areas where groundwater seeps into the stream, as these areas tend to hold more consistent temperatures, even during temperature swings.
