Brown Trout

While not as renowned as some other Minnesota destinations, Brookston and the surrounding area offer some surprisingly good brown trout fishing for the adventurous angler. The smaller tributaries that feed into the St. Louis River, like the Blackhoof River, can hold decent populations of browns, particularly in the cooler, spring-fed sections. These streams are often best fished using lighter tackle and more finesse. Spring and fall are prime times, coinciding with cooler water temperatures and trout spawning activity. Access can sometimes be challenging, requiring some hiking and bushwhacking to reach the more secluded spots. Check local regulations regarding stream access and any special trout regulations. A local tip: Pay attention to water levels – after a heavy rain, the streams can become turbid, so focus on areas with clearer water or wait for conditions to improve. Small spinners and natural-looking flies are often effective.
