Brown Trout

While Brooklyn Heights, Missouri, isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find opportunities within a reasonable drive. Focus on the cold-water tailwaters below some of the larger reservoirs in southern Missouri. These areas, like the Taneycomo Lake tailwater, offer the best chance to hook into browns. Spring and fall are prime times, as water temperatures are ideal and the trout are actively feeding. Early mornings and late evenings often produce the best results. A local tip: check the water release schedules from the dams before you go. High water can make wading difficult and affect fishing patterns. Also, be prepared to downsize your presentation; these trout can be picky. The brown trout in these tailwaters are often stocked, but some have naturalized and grown to impressive sizes. Respect the regulations and practice catch-and-release to help maintain this valuable fishery.
