Northern Pike

While Brooklyn Heights, Missouri, itself doesn't offer immediate access to pike fishing, a relatively short drive can put you on some decent northern pike waters. You'll need to head north towards areas with larger, cooler lakes or reservoirs. While not as abundant as in more northern states, some of the reservoirs around Kansas City (like Lake of the Ozarks further south) do hold pike. The key is to target weedy areas and shallow bays, especially in the spring after ice-out and again in the fall as the water cools. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. A local tip: Pike are ambush predators, so focus on areas where they can hide, such as weed edges or submerged timber. Be prepared with wire leaders, as pike have sharp teeth.
