Brown Trout

While Cross Timbers, Missouri, might not be the first place that comes to mind for brown trout, the nearby tailwaters of the Lake of the Ozarks offer a surprisingly good opportunity. The Niangua River below the dam is stocked regularly and provides the cool, oxygenated water brown trout thrive in. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are ideal and the crowds are thinner than in the summer months. Wading is possible in many areas, but be mindful of water releases from the dam, which can change water levels quickly. Check the Osage Energy website for release schedules before you go. For fly anglers, try streamers and nymphs. Spin anglers should have success with small crankbaits and spinners. The browns here aren't typically huge, but a dedicated angler can definitely find some quality fish.
