Brown Trout

While not as common as their rainbow cousins, Brown Trout can be found in some of the cooler, spring-fed streams near Diggins, Missouri. These fish are generally wild and can be more challenging to catch than stocked trout, requiring a more refined approach. Focus your efforts on streams that maintain cool water temperatures throughout the year. Spring and fall are the best times to fish, as the trout are more active and water conditions are ideal. Use small nymphs, dry flies, and streamers to imitate the natural food sources. A lightweight fly rod or spinning rod with 4-6lb test line is ideal. Be stealthy in your approach, as brown trout are easily spooked. A local tip: look for areas with deep pools and undercut banks, as these are prime hiding spots for brown trout. Remember to practice catch and release to help preserve this valuable resource. These browns may not be large, but are beautiful and rewarding to catch.
