Brown Trout

While Koshkonong, Missouri, might not be the first place that comes to mind for brown trout fishing, the Spring River and its spring-fed tributaries do offer a unique opportunity to target these beautiful fish. The Missouri Department of Conservation stocks brown trout in certain sections of the river, creating a put-and-take fishery. The best time to target browns here is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when the water temperatures are more favorable. Focus on areas with good current, deep pools, and plenty of structure like fallen trees and undercut banks. Small spinners, spoons, and crankbaits can be effective, as well as fly fishing with nymphs and streamers. A local tip: access to some of the best trout water can be limited, so be prepared to do some walking. Check the MDC's trout stocking schedule online and plan your trip accordingly for the best chance of success. Remember to purchase a Missouri trout permit in addition to your fishing license.
