Brown Trout

While southwest Missouri isn't typically known as a brown trout hotspot, the possibility exists for stocked fish to be present in some of the cooler, spring-fed streams near Lamar following state stocking efforts. Brown trout require cold, clean water, so targeting areas with consistent spring influence is key. The best time to pursue them, if present, would be in the cooler months – late fall, winter, and early spring – when water temperatures are optimal. Small spinners, spoons, or even live bait like worms can be effective. A practical tip: Check the Missouri Department of Conservation's stocking reports to see if any brown trout have been released in nearby streams. Access to these streams can sometimes be challenging, so be prepared to do some hiking. If you find brown trout, remember they can be wary, so use stealthy approaches and light tackle. The population is unlikely to be high, so practice catch and release to help sustain the fishery.
