Brown Trout

While Lamar Heights, Missouri, isn't widely known as a brown trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find opportunities in the area's spring-fed streams and tailwaters below smaller dams. These cooler waters, though perhaps not as prolific as more famous trout destinations, can hold surprisingly large browns. Focus your efforts on the Niangua River and its tributaries, or even the smaller creeks that feed into the Pomme de Terre Lake. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are ideal and the fish are actively feeding before and after the heat of summer. A local tip: early morning or late evening are the most productive times to fish. Access can be tricky; look for county road crossings and be respectful of private property. Many of the brown trout here are wild, so practice catch and release to help sustain the population. Also, be prepared for clear water conditions, requiring stealth and finesse tactics.
