Brown Trout

While Merriam Woods itself isn't known for prime trout waters, its location in the Ozarks puts you within striking distance of some excellent brown trout fisheries. Head south towards the White River system, particularly the tailwaters below Table Rock Dam or Bull Shoals Dam. These cold, clear waters are ideal for brown trout. The best time to target browns is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring. Streamers and nymphs are effective fly patterns, and small crankbaits or spinners can also produce results. Be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends, and check the generation schedules for the dams before you go, as water levels can rise rapidly. Also, remember that special regulations may apply in certain sections of the river, so consult the Missouri Department of Conservation guidelines.
