Brown Trout

While Olean, Missouri, isn't exactly known as a trout mecca, determined anglers can find some limited opportunities for Brown Trout within a reasonable drive. Head south towards the Ozark Mountains and explore the cold, clear streams and rivers that are stocked with trout. While not a native species here, the Missouri Department of Conservation stocks brown trout in several locations. Spring and fall are ideal times to target these fish, as water temperatures are cooler and trout are more active. A local tip: check the MDC's website for stocking schedules and locations. Also, be aware that many of these streams are small and require a stealthy approach. Use light tackle and natural-looking presentations like small nymphs or dry flies. The brown trout in this region can be wary, so patience and persistence are key. Remember to purchase a trout permit in addition to your regular fishing license.
