Brown Trout

Dodson, Montana, offers some surprisingly good brown trout fishing in the Milk River and nearby reservoirs. What makes this area special is the combination of relatively low fishing pressure and the river's unique character – a prairie river that can fluctuate dramatically with irrigation demands. Spring and early summer are prime times, as the trout are actively feeding after the ice melts and before the river gets too warm in the summer. Fall can also be productive as browns prepare for spawning. For access, look for public access points along the Milk River near Dodson; many are marked, but some require a bit of exploration. A local tip: be mindful of water levels, as they can change quickly. Check the Bureau of Reclamation's website for flow data before heading out. The browns here aren't generally huge, but they are wild and feisty, making for a rewarding experience.
