Brown Trout

While Melstone, Montana, isn't directly on a blue-ribbon trout stream, it serves as a launching point for exploring some excellent brown trout fisheries in the surrounding region. The Musselshell River, which meanders through the area, holds some browns, but it's the smaller tributaries and spring creeks that offer the best opportunities. These creeks, often requiring some hiking to reach, hold surprisingly large browns that can be quite selective. Autumn is a fantastic time to target these fish, as they become more aggressive before winter. Look for deep pools and undercut banks. A stealthy approach and precise casts are crucial. Local advice: Obtain landowner permission before accessing any private land along these creeks. Also, be aware of changing weather conditions in the fall; a sunny day can quickly turn into a snowstorm. A well-stocked fly box with a variety of nymphs and dry flies will increase your chances of success.
