If you're chasing trophy brown trout in Montana, don't overlook the area around Plains. The Clark Fork River, flowing nearby, is the star attraction. What makes this stretch special is a combination of classic freestone river structure – deep pools, riffles, and undercut banks – coupled with relatively less fishing pressure compared to the more famous western Montana rivers. Spring and fall are prime times. In spring, look for pre-spawn browns actively feeding. Fall sees them bulking up for winter and staging for spawning. Access can be a mix of public and private land, so be sure to check regulations and respect landowners. A good starting point is the public access sites along Highway 200. One tip: Pay close attention to water temperature. Browns become more active in cooler water, especially during the warmer months. Focus on early mornings and late evenings.
