Brown Trout

While Havre isn't typically known for its Brown Trout fishing, adventurous anglers can find some opportunities within a reasonable drive. The Milk River and its tributaries, though often warmer and more turbid than ideal trout streams, can hold some resident browns, particularly in the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Further afield, the Missouri River, a few hours south, offers a more reliable brown trout fishery. Focus on areas with good cover, such as undercut banks, submerged logs, and riffles. Fly fishing with streamers and nymphs can be effective, as can spin fishing with small spinners and spoons. A local tip for the Milk River is to fish after a period of stable water levels, as the river can fluctuate significantly. Also, be aware of private property boundaries and obtain permission before fishing on private land. Brown trout in this area are often opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different patterns and presentations until you find what they're hitting.
