While not a renowned trout destination, Somerville, NJ, offers a few opportunities to chase brown trout in the Raritan River and its tributaries. The South Branch of the Raritan, in particular, is stocked with brown trout and offers some decent fishing, especially in the spring and fall. Focus on areas with riffles, runs, and pools. Fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies can be effective, as can spin fishing with small spinners and spoons. A local tip: Check the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife stocking schedule to find out when and where the river has been recently stocked. Also, be aware that the water can be low and clear during the summer months, making the trout more skittish. Consider fishing during the early morning or late evening hours for the best results. The brown trout in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different patterns and presentations until you find what they're biting.
