Crappie fishing near Somerville, NJ, can be surprisingly rewarding if you know where to look. While the Raritan River itself isn't known for crappie, the smaller lakes and ponds scattered throughout Somerset County can hold decent populations. Look for bodies of water with submerged structure, brush piles, and lily pads. Spring is the prime time, as the crappie move into the shallows to spawn. Use small jigs tipped with minnows or crappie nibbles, and fish them under a bobber. Fall can also be productive as the water cools. A local's tip: Many of these ponds are smaller and can be easily fished from the bank. Check local regulations regarding access and permits. The crappie in these smaller waters can be a bit finicky, so experiment with different colors and presentations until you find what works. Also, be aware that some ponds may have limited public access, so research your options beforehand.
