Brown Trout

While Detroit Lake is more renowned for its kokanee and rainbow trout, a population of brown trout also calls this Oregon reservoir home. Targeting these browns requires a different approach than the typical kokanee trolling. Focus your efforts along the steeper, rocky banks and near the dam. Early morning and late evening are the prime times to fish for browns, as they become more active during low-light conditions. Trolling with spoons or crankbaits that mimic smaller baitfish can be effective, or casting these lures from shore is another viable option. The North Santiam River, which feeds into Detroit Lake, also holds brown trout, though access can be more challenging. Be prepared for cooler temperatures, especially in the spring and fall. Remember to check the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations for specific rules regarding trout fishing in Detroit Lake and the North Santiam River.
