Brown Trout

Brown trout fishing near Woodburn, Oregon, is best found by venturing a bit further afield to the Santiam River system. While not directly in Woodburn, the Santiam, particularly the North Santiam, offers a good chance at hooking into a wild or hatchery-raised brown. The best time to target them is during the fall, after the salmon runs have subsided and the water has cleared up. Brown trout in the Santiam are often found in deeper pools and runs, especially those with rocky bottoms and plenty of cover. Try using streamers or nymphs, or even small spinners, to entice a strike. Access to the North Santiam is available at various points along Highway 22. Be aware of the regulations regarding size and bag limits, and also check for any specific closures or restrictions. The browns in this system can be quite wary, so stealth and a careful presentation are key to success. A longer leader and lighter tippet can make a big difference.
