Brown Trout
For the fly-fishing enthusiast, Big Piney offers access to some fantastic brown trout fishing in the Green River and its tributaries. The Green is renowned for its healthy population of browns, known for their aggressive takes and willingness to rise to a well-presented dry fly. The best time to target these fish is late summer and early fall when the water levels drop and the trout are actively feeding before winter. Look for deeper pools and undercut banks, especially in the sections below Fontenelle Dam. Nymphing with stonefly patterns or streamers can be effective in these areas. A practical tip: access to the Green River is available at several public access points along Highway 189. Be mindful of private property and always obtain the necessary licenses and permits. Brown trout in this area average 12-16 inches, but larger specimens are certainly possible, especially during the pre-spawn period in the fall. Be prepared for changing weather conditions, as mountain weather can be unpredictable.
