The brown trout fishing around Meeteetse offers a classic Wyoming experience. The Greybull River, which flows near town, holds a healthy population of browns. This is a freestone river, meaning water levels fluctuate depending on snowmelt and rainfall. The best time to target browns here is typically late spring through early fall, after the runoff has subsided and before the river freezes. Terrestrial patterns can be very effective in the late summer. Access to the Greybull is relatively easy, with several public access points along Highway 120. Be mindful of private property and respect landowners' rights. The browns in the Greybull aren't generally huge, averaging 12-16 inches, but they are wild and feisty, making for a rewarding fishing experience. Wading can be challenging due to the river's rocky bottom and strong currents, so good wading boots and a wading staff are recommended.
