Cabezon
Monterey offers excellent cabezon fishing along its rocky coastline and within Monterey Bay. The varied structure, from kelp forests to submerged boulders, provides ideal habitat for these ambush predators. Spring and early summer are prime times, as cabezon move into shallower waters to spawn. Look for them around tide pools and rocky outcroppings during low tide. A key access point is Point Lobos State Natural Reserve; however, be mindful of marine protected area (MPA) regulations. Also, be aware that the cabezon population in Monterey Bay can be susceptible to overfishing, so practice responsible harvesting and consider catch and release, especially for larger specimens. When targeting cabezon, remember they are bottom dwellers. Use heavy jigs or bait rigged close to the bottom. A slow, deliberate presentation is key to enticing a strike.
