California Halibut

San Francisco Bay is a surprisingly productive location for California halibut. The bay's shallow, brackish waters and abundance of forage fish create an ideal habitat for these flatfish. The best time to target halibut in the bay is typically from April through October, with the spring and early summer months being particularly productive. Focus your efforts around areas with strong tidal currents, such as the Raccoon Strait or near the Golden Gate Bridge. Live bait, such as shiner perch or anchovies, is highly effective. Several marinas around the bay offer boat rentals and launching facilities. A local tip: pay close attention to the tides, as halibut often feed aggressively during tidal changes. Also, be aware of the strong currents in the bay and use appropriate weights to keep your bait or lure near the bottom. The halibut in the bay are known to be aggressive feeders, so don't be afraid to use larger baits or lures.
