Catfish

Chicago offers some surprisingly good catfish opportunities, primarily in the Chicago River system and its connected waterways. Channel catfish are the most common target, but flatheads are also present, especially in the deeper holes. Summer is prime time, particularly after a good rain when the water is slightly stained. Focus on areas with current, structure, and depth changes. The Des Plaines River is another productive area. Stinkbaits, cut bait (shad or bluegill), and nightcrawlers are all effective. For larger flatheads, live bait is often preferred. Heavier tackle is a must, especially when fishing around heavy cover. There are numerous access points along the river, including several public parks and boat launches. Be mindful of boat traffic, especially on weekends. Also, be aware of any advisories regarding consumption of fish from the Chicago River.
