Catfish

If you're after whiskered giants in Milwaukee, the catfish scene is surprisingly robust. The Milwaukee River, its tributaries, and even the harbor offer excellent opportunities, especially after dark. Channel cats are the most common, but flatheads lurk in deeper holes, particularly in the main river channel. Spring and early summer, when water temperatures rise and catfish move into shallower areas to spawn, are prime times. Focus on areas with current breaks, structure like fallen trees, and the mouths of feeder creeks. For bait, you can't go wrong with cut bait like alewives or chubs, readily available at local bait shops. A pro tip: access to the river is excellent from many of the city's parks, but be mindful of urban runoff after heavy rains, which can affect water clarity and catfish activity. Also, consider fishing near the Miller Park stadium – the industrial discharge can sometimes create warmer water pockets that attract catfish.
