Channel Catfish
Paradise Valley might not be the first place that comes to mind for channel catfish, but the urban lakes and canals around the area hold some surprisingly good populations. The Arizona Canal and Tempe Town Lake are worth exploring. Night fishing during the warmer months (late spring through summer) is your best bet. Catfish are primarily nocturnal feeders, and the cooler temperatures at night make them more active. Use stink baits, nightcrawlers, or cut bait fished on the bottom. A helpful local tip: check the canal flows before you go. Higher flows can make it more difficult to fish. While you won't find monster cats here, you can expect to catch fish in the 1-5 pound range, with the occasional larger one mixed in. Be sure to have a sturdy rod and reel as well as a proper net to land any bigger fish.
