Channel Catfish

Channel catfish provide excellent fishing opportunities around Battlefield, Missouri, especially in the James River and the larger reservoirs like Table Rock Lake (a bit of a drive, but worth it). These whiskered predators are relatively abundant and readily take a variety of baits. Summer nights are particularly productive, as catfish become more active under the cover of darkness. Stinkbaits, chicken liver, and cut bait are all reliable choices. For the James River, focus on deeper holes and areas with submerged structure. A helpful hint is to use a slip sinker rig to keep your bait on the bottom where catfish feed. Also, be mindful of the river's current; you may need heavier weights to hold your bait in place. The channel catfish in this region can grow to impressive sizes, with some reaching well over 10 pounds, so be prepared for a good fight!
