Channel Catfish

If you're after whiskered giants in west-central Missouri, Louisburg offers some excellent channel catfishing opportunities. The numerous farm ponds and smaller lakes dotting the landscape around Louisburg are often overlooked, but they can hold surprisingly large catfish. The Marais des Cygnes River also winds through the area, providing another good option, especially after a bit of rain when catfish move into the feeder creeks. Spring and early summer, particularly after the spawn, are prime times to target channel cats here. Bait fishing with stinkbaits, cut bait, or nightcrawlers is the most common and effective method. A local tip: many of the ponds are on private land, so always seek permission before fishing. Also, be prepared for some heavy vegetation along the banks, which can make access challenging but also provides excellent catfish habitat. The catfish in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different baits to find what they're biting on.
