Channel Catfish

Channel catfish provide a fun and accessible fishing opportunity near Pecos, New Mexico. While the Pecos River itself holds catfish, smaller ponds and reservoirs in the surrounding area can also be productive. Warmer months, from late spring through summer, are the prime time for targeting channel cats. They tend to be most active at dawn and dusk, and especially at night. Use traditional catfish baits like nightcrawlers, chicken liver, or commercially prepared stink baits. Focus on fishing near the bottom in deeper pools or near submerged structure such as fallen trees or rocks. A good access point is along the lower Pecos River where it flows through Villanueva State Park. Be mindful of the regulations regarding bait restrictions and size limits set by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The channel catfish in this area are generally plentiful, offering a reliable fishing experience for anglers of all skill levels. Remember to bring a good pair of pliers for removing hooks, as catfish can be notoriously difficult to unhook.
