White Bass

If you're looking for some fast-paced action in northern New Mexico, consider targeting white bass near Pecos. While not as well-known as some other New Mexico fisheries, the Pecos River and nearby reservoirs like Storrie Lake can offer excellent white bass fishing, especially during their spring spawning runs. Look for them to congregate near the inlet areas of Storrie Lake as the water warms. Spring (April-May) is prime time, but you can also find them in the fall as they school up. A local tip: check the river flow rates on the Pecos River before you go; high flows can make fishing difficult. Small crankbaits and spinners are effective, but don't be afraid to experiment with jigs tipped with minnows. The white bass here aren't huge, averaging around a pound, but their aggressive strikes and schooling behavior make for exciting fishing.
