Channel Catfish

If you're after channel cats in southern Oklahoma, Mill Creek offers some excellent opportunities, particularly in the local creeks and the Washita River. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are prime times. Look for cats staging near deeper holes and structure as the water warms. A great tactic here is fishing with live or cut bait – shad or sunfish work well – near submerged timber or rocky outcroppings. Bank fishing access is available at several points along the Washita, but be mindful of private property. A small boat or kayak can open up more of the river to you. Local tip: Check water levels before you go, as heavy rains can quickly make the river unfishable. The catfish in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different baits.
