Channel Catfish

If you're after channel cats in southern Oklahoma, Walters offers some excellent opportunities. The numerous small lakes and ponds in the area, many privately owned but accessible with permission, hold surprisingly large populations of channel catfish. But for more accessible fishing, head to nearby Waurika Lake. This large reservoir is known for its healthy catfish population, especially in the late spring and early summer when they move into shallower waters to spawn. Target areas near submerged timber and rocky points with cut bait, stink bait, or live worms. A good local tip is to fish the windy side of the lake, as the wave action stirs up the bottom and attracts catfish. Also, be aware that Waurika Lake can experience fluctuating water levels, so check conditions before you go. The channel catfish here average 2-5 pounds, but larger fish are definitely possible, especially during the spawning season.
